Holotype: Abundant algal symbionts in a large specimen (20 x 4 cm) of a grey didemnid ascidian, collected 2 April 1974 from a root of Rhizophora mangle growing in a lagoon on Isla San José, Baja California, Mexico, deposited by R. A. Lewin at the Department of Cryptogams, Natural History Museum, London (BM).
